Jo Mason
Solo Horn

My Great Grandfather played BBb bass with Glossop.

When my brothers were 11 they took up cornet and my dad the bass at Urmston and Davyhulme. Not wanting to be left out, aged 4 I started the cornet!, switching to Tenor Horn at 6 , when I also performed in my first concert.

I then played with Sale Junior Band under Paul Reilly and moved up to the Senior band at 9, when I played next to Richard Mitton's dad.

At 12 I moved onto Solo Horn and was the only female in the band for about 8 years. I played with the band for about 20 years during which time there were 5 members of the family in the band:

Me on Solo Horn
Dad James Mason on Double B flat bass
Brother James Mason on Principal Cornet
Brother David Mason on Euphonium
Sister-in-law Jane on 2nd Horn

I then did 8 years in 2nd and 3rd section bands before rejoining Sale Brass in 2000 on Solo Horn.
