News Archive 2006

Well the playing before the match at at half-time seemed to be well received today at Stockport County Football Club this afternoon, but I can't remember the last time I was so wet.  Thanks to Lesley fro arranging the deps and to Joe for conducting the marches and Stockport County won 3:0 in the end.

Just in case you don't know the band raised just over £610 during the Christmas caroling - thanks to all concerned. One last thing the next rehearsal is on Wednesday and I hope you all have a Happy New Year.

The two carol playing events were an amazing success. I think we played at nine places on the Wednesday and eleven places on the Friday. Thanks to all who attended and to - Karl for arranging the events; Steve and Joe for leading the band and to Lesley for collecting..

I shall never forget where the Carter Arms is but that is another story........

Two events to report on. Firstly the Piper Hill School which was its normal success which was enjoyed by all players and the member of the school.

Secondly the Stockport  Unitarian Church was an amazing concert. I can't ever remember a concert where the audience were so proactive in an event that I have played at. It amazing that we ever were allow to leave.

First the good news. The Kirsty apeal concert on the 26 November was an amazing success. I've not got the final figure raised yet but a great night and full information is here details. Second item Lesley has manage to obtain yet another grant of £4,000. So that brings the grant total she has raised to £9,500. Absolutely amazing work Lesley.

Other news the Walton Hall job on the 17 December is cancelled as there was some problems with the booking and unfortunately Rob will be leaving us after the concert on the 9 December. I am sure we will all give him our best wishes before then and thanks for the years with us.

The details for the concert on 9 December have been updated on the event page.

Sunday 17 December 2006
Walton Hall, Warrington

Three 30/40 minutes slots between 11:00am and 4:00pm. Final details to be agreed.

We have received a letter of thanks from Trafford MBC for part in the our the Remembrance Day parade. Helen Fox will be with us on Monday in preparation for Sundays concert. Also can we ensure full rehearsals for Monday and Wednesday nights as the guest players will be down.

With regards to the Kirsty concert, currently 236 tickets have been sold. There will be a rehearsal on the day at the Garrick Theatre, from 2pm until 3.30pm. The theatre will be available for setting up throughout the day. Articles have been placed in the Sale Messenger and the Manchester Evening News, hopefully they will be printed and it is hoped that there will be a feature item on Channel M. Additional raffle prizes are still welcome and volunteers are still required. The programmes are well in hand and will be sequentially numbered for a draw prize.

The Remembrance Day parade seemed to be better attended than in recent years. May be something to do with the mild weather. Afterwards Steve and ten of us helped the Northerden Band out at their concert at the British Legion. They seem to be down to about seven members which does seem to be a shame.

Just a reminder that the concert at the Oakfield Club in Sale on Friday 15 December has been cancelled due to the club closing. Apparently it should be opening again next year.

Sorry that there was no Pontin's contest update over the weekend but there have been a few problems over the last few days. Normal rehearsal tonight, ready for the event on Sunday. As discussed last week thanks again for  Lesley's second lottery grant in two weeks. I will add a formal notice once I have obtained all the logos.

Latest photo of Richard. From the email I received it said "I thought that the attached photo might amuse you. The ladies in the office have been raising money for “Keep it pink”, the breast cancer awareness day."

He did say that this image could be uploaded. I went to work in a pink shirt and made a donation but I must admit this is taking it to the maximum :-) Well done Richard, but it won't be added to the band uniform.

Some GREAT news. I don't know if you are aware but Lesley has been applying for various grants appertain to various functions that the band carries out. Yesterday she was notified that the application from the the Arts Council (Regional Arts Lottery Fund) has been approved. This one is in connection with some instruments for the training band but I am sure she will bring you all up-to-date tomorrow.

Also normal band rehearsal tomorrow.

Please note - Gerry has arranged for tomorrow's rehearsal to be held at the Sale Hotel.

It has been suggested that due to the number of people on holiday etc on Wednesday that this rehearsal will be cancelled. This is to be discussed tomorrow night.

Just a reminder that the rehearsal on Monday will start with a sectional practice for Euphs, baris and basses. So the normal rehearsal will start at 8:30pm for everyone else.

Thanks for all the replies to my 'spam' to the email group, but there is no way we can accept this job due to the limited number of available players. Hopefully they will consider us next year and give us more notice. Richard is going to contact the organiser today.

14 September 2006

We have the chance of a march job on Sunday at 10:00 in Middlewich. Richard has been contacted by the organiser as a local youth band has let them down. Will you let me know ASAP if you are available!!!

There will be no rehearsal on Wednesday due to holidays etc. On Monday there will be a Trombone and Horn sectional practice at 8:00 with the normal rehearsal starting at 8:30.

No rehearsal tonight due to the Bank Holiday. However, there will be a normal practice on Wednesday.

22 August 2006

Not a lot to report recently. But can the committee remember the meeting tomorrow night.

8 July 2006
Brass in the Bull Ring - Middlewich

Well this event wasn't as well supported as the last time we played in the Bull Ring! In the end we did two spots with a pipe band playing for a few minutes in between.

I have just uploaded the committee minutes notes (thanks once again Lesley), and on Monday we must decide if we are going to start having two rehearsals a week, See you all on Monday.

As already discussed, the website has been uploaded to a new server, so will you kindly let me know if you spot any errors or broken links. Can I take this opportunity of thanking Julie, Colin and all at CCS Limited for their continuing support and sponsoring of our website. I would total endorse their services so kindly contact them at http://www.ccs-limited.com/ for all your commercial computer, network, repair/support and web hosting needs.

Message from Soo

Wonder if you were already aware of this - it is the pick of the day in our Radio listings ( from the Independent on Sunday), might be nice to group email the info to everyone or at least put on the website. It may be repeated on the 'listen again facility on the radio 4 website (bbc.co.uk/radio4)

Dylan Winter attempts to keep up with the action in Saddleworth, near Manchester, during the Whit Friday band contests as 100 brass bands compete for six hours.

The coach on Whit Friday will be leaving Sale at 4:30pm.

A message from Lesley - "the sponsor have pulled the plug (no reason given) and that the March and Hymn Contest on 4th June is therefore cancelled." See you all tonight.

23 April 2006
St. George's Day event

Yesterday, we played at two 45 minute events at the Bull Ring in Middlewich Town Centre. There was a medium-sized audience and we were sandwiched between Morris dancers and poets. A great day with a terrific atmosphere.  I must admit I have never been to Middllewich before but I will be back.

A quick reminder that there is a rehearsal tonight at the Sale Hotel at the normal time.

Some good news and some bad

Firstly John has finally got a date for his operation. And...... we have an early draw at the Buxton contest which starts at 9:00am.

Supplementary log - This afternoon I met Bob and Margaret Richards in Dunham Park. They both looked well even though Bob only had a tumor removed from behind his right ear three and a half weeks ago. He gets his biopsy results next week.

Last Monday, the first of the learner rehearsals took place. Thank to Peter, Karl and Joe for a great start. I have just sent some information off to the local papers and lets see if we get any interest from them.

Two quick things - I spoke to Soo on Friday night and she is hoping to be at Monday's rehearsal. Also Monday night will be the first of the learner group sessions.

At the AGM Sue step down from her role as Concert Secretary, a position she has held for the last three years and did a terrific job.

She thanked the band for the flowers and this is the first chance I have had to upload the photo.

I have just also uploaded the full minutes of the AGM (thanks Lesley), together with all the possible current band job. Will you all kindly check your diaries for Monday night.

Just a reminder from last nights rehearsal that the AGM will be on 20 February at 8:00. Normal rehearsal afterwards time permitting.

Also Linda Edmondson of the Sale Choral Society has kindly sent me some photographs of the concert we did with them on 20 December. Thanks Linda :-)

6 February 2006
Concert for the Mayor of Trafford

I forgot to update the site after the concert at the Robert Bolt Theatre Sale on the 28 January, with the Alma Singers,  Meadway Singers, Meadway Youth Choir and Sale Male Voice Choir. It was a long night and too many pieces to mention. The girls of the Meadway Youth Choir were in fine voice and promoting their new CD - Clear Sounds.

Trinity Church, Trinity Road, Sale.

Last nights concert was a well received. We played to about 90 people at Trinity Church which was a good venue even though some people had problems finding it Map. Hopefully we will be playing there again soon.

A quick update

From the joint concert we had with the Sale Choral Society on 20 December. Also the first rehearsal in 2006 will be on the 9 January.

The concert was a great success and a total sell-out. All over Christmas I have had people coming up to me saying how much they enjoyed it.

As a quick overview of the event the choir was conducted by Russell Medley with Roderick Barrand on piano. The band was conducted, as normal by our musical director - Steve Shawcross.

Eight of us went out caroling on Wednesday (£160-74) and seven tonight (£234-80). Unofficially, until Richard checks my addups we raised £395-54. Thanks to Richard, Garth, Karl, Andrew, Rachael, Peter, Mike and Gerry.

18 December 2005
Oakfield Club, Oakfield, Sale

The annual Christmas concert was greatly received by all.
There will be a rehearsal tomorrow night as normal and the details of the concert on Tuesday is on the events page.

12 December 2005
Piper Hill School

The annual Christmas concert seems to have been it's normal success. A small band played for the school with many of the children having a chance to conduct the band.

Sale Conservative Club

The turn out for last night's annual Christmas concert was very poor. However, those attending were in good voice which at least made up for the empty tables.

An quick update on John - he is home but now having problems with the antibiotics, which is causing him to sleep most of the time. Hopefully this will change today when the dosage is due to be reduced.

The concert last night went down well with the dinners at the Urmston Masonic lodge's Christmas Do. On the way out I spoke to Bob Gresty who used to play baritone with the band for many year - he left about 1975. I invited him to our rehearsals so who knows we may see him again soon.
